Carpenter ants (Camponotus sp.) build nests in dead and damp wood. Unlike termites, they do not eat wood, although they can still weaken structures by cutting galleries in the wood grain. As they prefer moist conditions, areas around and under windows, eaves, decks and porches are the most likely places in homes to find the ants.
Unlike termites, Carpenter ant galleries are smooth and not packed with mud. Frass (a sawdust-like material) can often be found near their galleries.
